Jinja Resident District Commissioner, Richard Gulume wants women banned from carrying large handbags to worship centres so as to prevent terror incidents in churches and mosques. He says handbags are one of the items terrorists discreetly carry their explosives and other dangerous material in.

The RDC suggests that those carrying Holy Books and hymn books should use small bags (clutch bags) or simply carry them in their hands.

He brought the issue to the fore while addressing journalists at his office on the weekend.

Gulume argued that despite the desire for women to keep up with fashion trends, they should remain security-conscious at best.

“I know it is style for women to look good while matching their attires with shoes and handbags but they should also prioritize their lives because it matters [more] than their bags. Let everyone take our messages seriously because matters on security have no compromise,” he said.

Gulume called for security committees to be set up in markets and taxi parks and to intensify their surveillance.

“You should not consider security of your property at night alone but it should be all the time so that we don’t give room to people with bad intentions,” he said.

He asked garage owners and fuel station owners to report unaccounted for vehicles at their premises and also urged the public to report any suspicious objects they may come across.
