Maria Uwanjye is 65 years old. She is the elder sister of late singer Mutamuriza Annonciata who passed away leaving six orphans that she rising at Kimihurura area. Uwanjye took over the duties of her deceased little sister and keeps rising the orphans who increased in number. They are currently 17 healthy orphans.
The elderly woman is jobless but well-hearted to help the orphans grow and be healthy.
Among the children, are the ones who are physically handicapped, others studying both at University, secondary and primary levels.
There are others who undergo vocational studies.
Uwanjye started raising those orphans in 1996 when her little sister died due to a road accident that took her life. At that time, she ( Mutamuliza) was caring about six orphans but the number kept increasing since then.
The whole hearted woman tanks the Caritas Rwanda (a charitable organization) that provides her with a house in which the children are being taken care in.
I took the legacy left by my sister and this task provides me with full joy to help in raising Rwandan children who are in need, she says.
The elderly woman says that she always calls upon Jesus and his Mother Marry to be at her side in all that she does and this strengthens her commitment and efforts.
At the other side, she calls upon other well-hearted people to provide them with a house that will be their own belonging so that, at her death, orphans must live comfortably.
Late Kamaliza was a native of the current Nyaruguru district in the South Province. At her little age, she, alongside her family, fled to Burundi due to the persecutions that Tutsis were enduring in 1959.
In 1990, she took arms to liberate Rwanda in the 1990-1994 liberation struggle engaged by the RPF.
After the liberation struggle was won, she undertook charitable actions to children in different areas of Rwanda where orphans were hosted.
