The medal award ceremony that was celebrated in Jeremie at the Rwanda FPU base camp was attended by Minustah Representative and different dignitaries like the Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) and the head of the Mission Ssandra Honore, Police Commissioner Luis Miguel Carrilho(Portugal), force Commander Lieutenant General Jose Luiz Jaborandy Jr.(Brasilian) among others.

In his welcome remarks, the RNP contingent commander in Haiti, Chief Superintendent Peter Hodari thanked his colleagues for their exemplary service and dedication to encourage them to even perform better. “You are ambassadors of Rwanda and you should always endeavor to lift your Country’s flag high in the areas where you are deployed” he noted.

The Rwandan contingent commander said Rwanda is committed to contribute to peace building in other countries.

Sandra Honore who presided over the ceremony, praised the Rwandan government for its contribution to bringing peace in Haiti and their effort in gender awareness by bringing more women Police officers in the Mission. She also thanked the Rwandan officers for their professionalism, commitment and integrity in achieving the Minustah mandate.

Sandra commended the Rwandans Police Officers for their great efforts in crowd control, humanitarian activities, and road rehabilitation among others.

In his message the Police Commissioner noted that the Rwandan Police contingent performed to its expectations and that their significant achievements build credibility for MINUSTAH and Rwanda in particular.

This contingent was deployed in July 4th, 2013 to bring peace and stability in the Caribbean country. They will be replaced this month as another team also prepares to be deployed.

Since their deployment in Haiti, the mandate of Rwanda police officers was to support UN activities in this destabilized country and to help Haitian National Police to maintain security.

However, the role of Rwanda FPUIV goes beyond its mandate of helping Haitian National Police to ensure the safety of people living in Haiti but also to support people’s welfare, enhance development through maintaining infrastructure and environmental protection.
