A cabinet meeting on Tuesday appointed Brig Gen George Rwigamba as the Commissioner General for Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS), replacing Maj Gen Paul Rwarakabije.

The meeting held at Urugwiro Village and chaired by President Paul Kagame also named Lt Col Chantal Ujeneza as RCS Deputy Commissioner General, a position that has been held by Mary Gahonzire.

Rwigamba has been in charge of civil-military relations at Rwanda Defence Forces.

The same meeting also approved Didier Nkurikiyimfura, who has been the Director General in charge of ICT in the Ministry of Youth and ICT, as the head of technology and innovation at the newly-created SMART Africa secretariat, whose headquarters are based in Kigali.

Headed by Dr Hamadoun Touré, the former Director General of International Telecommunications Union, SMART Africa is an initiative endorsed by African heads of state to accelerate ICT penetration on the continent.

Other decisions from the cabinet included the naming of a team of inspectors to oversee the usage and distribution of organic fertilisers and pesticides, as a way to increase production from the country’s agriculture sector.

According to the minutes of the cabinet meeting which were signed off by Stella Ford Mugabo, the Minister in charge of Cabinet Affairs, the meeting was informed that the annual gorilla naming ceremony, Kwit’Izina will this year be held on September 2 and will see the naming of 19 baby gorillas.

It was also announced that subsequent gorilla naming ceremonies will be held every first Friday of September.
