The commemoration event started with the posing of the wreaths of flowers to the genocide memorial site located in Nyamata.

The survivors continued the commemoration activities at the boarders of the Akagera river where many bodies of the Tutsis have been thrown by the killers in the 1994.

Many of the Tutsis who were fleeing from the surrounding areas came to search for refuge in  the swamps of the Akagera.

The big number of them were killed by the Interahamwe killers and thrown in the river.

After the walk to remember, participants gathered at the Catholic church parish in the Kagerero cell.

Pastor Rurangirwa Emmanuel, from the ADEPR church said that  commemorating one’s family members is an act of heroism.

He quoted prophet Nehemiah who encouraged the Jews survivors of the manhunt of king Nebuchadnezzar to keep striving for better life, thus encouraging the 1994 genocide survivors to do the same.

The Executive secretary of the Mwogo sector, Ruzagiriza Vital, focused on the commitment of survivors to develop and live happily so to negate the willingness of the killers who were aimed at exterminating  them.

One of the elderly survivors,  Karangwa Antoine explained the dark  history that characterized the lives of the Tutsis living at the epoch, whereby they have been mistreated and some of them were killed in 1959, 1962, 1992,and in 1994, respectively.

He thanked some of the Hutu who saved the Tutsis even of most of them participated into the killings.

Karangwa revealed that he himself has been saved by three families of the Hutus who hided him.

The message in these  tracks highlighted that the Tutsis who survived should remember the smell of the bodies of their relatives killed in the genocide.

Karangwa said that one of the catholic church fathers was known to sensitize the Hutus to hate their fellow Tutsis who belonged in the same church. Karangwa thanked Muhayimana Emmanuel who hide him for 30 days.

Mukakarangwa Ernestine said that she has been injured in the head by the killers and throw her in the waters of the Akagera river.

They also killed all of her parents . She has been saved by one of the Hutus families  who belonged to an Muslim family.
