Minister of agriculture Dr Geraldine Mukeshimana told reporters that the industrial fertilizers are useful for farmers as it helps the increase of agricultural production. One of the challenges faced by farmers is that they don’t keep using it in an effective way.
In Rwanda farmers have diverging views about the use of industrial fertilizers, some accusing it to spoiling the soil.
To them, Minister Mukeshimana advises them to keep using the fertilizer as it will be helping the soil to be richer in minerals and other useful nutrients that crops need to grow.
She said that the demographic growth does not go along with the agricultural production; therefore the use of industrial fertilizers can be of a great input as to create food security.
Rwandan government initiated a program to help farmers have access to the industrial fertilizers through the so-called ‘Nkunganire’ program.
Min Mukeshimana urged farmers to increase their skills and knowledge as to produce more.
The aim of the press conference was to reveal to media how farming season B will be managed depending on the last one.
Regarding the production of the ended season A, she said that it was not as satisfying as expected.
Despite this, she underlined that Rwanda will be self sufficient in terms of food security.
