Police recovers Rwf30 million stolen from businessman

Police in Musanze district recovered over Rwf30 million stolen from a businessman in Remera, Gasabo district, recently.

The arrested suspects

The recovered money is part of the Euros 18, 000 and US$20, 000 dollars stolen from the businessman’s (name withheld) car at his home in Remera on the evening of April 30.

The money was recovered from the housemaid of the businessman, Jean de Dieu Habinshuti, who also went missing from the day of the theft.

Habinshuti and his cousin, John Bosco Karimunda, both who hails from Ngororero district were arrested from a house they had rented in Cyabararika cell of Musanze sector where Euros16, 000, US$10, 000 and over Frw8.2 million was recovered.

It was handed over to the owner on Sunday.

The duo had already spent part of the money at the time of their arrest on Sunday.

They are currently detained at Muhoza Police station.

Habinshuti argued that he was tempted to steal the money after he found it in his boss’ car, which he was apparently washing.

“Normally when my boss came back home, I would wash his car both inside and out. This time when I opened the car to wash it inside, I saw a bag and out of curiosity to know what was inside, I opened it and saw big sums of money, which tempted me to steal,” Habinshuti, who begged to be pardoned, argued.

His employer, however, argued him out saying that he stole the car key and stole the money from the car before fleeing.

He said he had withdrawn the money to transact his business deals, but was shocked when he went to collect it from the car and couldn’t find it.

“It was like a shock, but I really thanked the Rwanda National Police for recovering my money and the professionalism and quick response they exhibit in ensuring safety of people living in Rwanda and their property,” the businessman said.

Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Northern region Police spokesperson also appealed to the business community not to keep or move with such big sums of money to avoid such risks.

“Banking and business transactions were made easier without carrying such big sums of money. They should always used banking tools like check books or make transactions within financial institutions,” Supt. Hitayezu, who also appealed to them to guard the banking tools jealously, said.
