Over 80 per cent of domestic garbage will be transformed into modern fertilizers (REMA)

Yesterday, the Rwanda Environment Management Authority ( REMA) held a meeting with different cooperatives in charge of garbage gathering. The meeting aimed at discussing how operations can be channeled as to be more effective and coordinated.

Many associations in charge of garbage gathering have been created as to help locals live in clean and safe environment. However, many claims have been raised concerning the fact that some services are not delivered as effectively as expected.

The same of the entrepreneurs said that they endured different challenges related to the fact that their clients are not paying the services regularly and effectively.

Remy Duhuze from  REMA  said that garbage packages  should be  grouped in two separate manners.

The first category should is made up by decomposable garbage while the other is made up by more stronger garbage.

He urged the businessmen to monitor how their respective companies operate as to the bring upon effective services for the clients.

The effective collection of separate garbage  packages will be of a great importance to the environment protection.

For the businessmen, the most challenging situation relates to the fact that clients do not pay for the services as expected while the investment required a significant investment.

This does not benefit to the business welfare, one of the investors said.

The CEO of the COOPEK , Buregeya Polain said that the company’s activities  in the Nyarugenge district have bore positive results  especially as the cooperative has been able to separate the  decomposable garbage from the non decomposable one.

This has provided us with financial incomes, he revealed during the meeting.

Among the invited cooperatives were the ones from the Southern Province. One of the cooperatives presented its concerns as it was used to take the garbage to Huye district but that it has later on asked to take them to Nyamagabe, something that costs them too much, they said.

The policy of REMA is that decomposable garbage should be collected and gathered separately from the non decomposable one so that the decomposable can be used by farmers as fertilizers.

REMA advised the cooperatives to separate the garbage because the clients will be willing to pay for the non decomposable garbage.

While some cooperatives urge that the cost of transport is not economically promising, a relative number of households affirm that services of the cooperatives are not as adequate as expected.

One household in Nyarugenge district is expected to pay a monthly fee of 2000 thousands.
