Masaka cyclists sensitized on crime prevention

Over 200 members of COTAVEMA, a cooperative of commercial bicycle operators in Masaka, Kicukiro District were on July 15 sensitized on their role in the ongoing campaign to fight and prevent crimes.

While speaking to the cyclists in Cyimo cell, Chief Inspector Jean Claude Kabandana appealed to them to cooperate with communities in ensuring security.

As people who transport various individuals, he urged them to always know those they transport and luggage so that they don’t become culprits of their own making and report those that could be involved in any illegal or criminal act.

He also appealed to them to work professionally while wearing reflector jackets, install light reflectors and lights to help them when operating at night.

CIP Kabandana explained that cyclists are among the major cause of road accidents are cautioned them against breaching traffic rules which leads to loss of lives and property.

The executive secretary of Masaka Sector, Roger Ndoba also asked them to think of what will develop their cooperative like starting a savings scheme which will help them upgrade to buying motorcycles from bicycles.

Ndoba donated a bicycle to an area resident, Protais Habineza, who also joined the cooperative.

Ndoba also urged them to be patriotic Rwandans while participating in various development programmes like Umuganda, send their children to school and subscribe medical insurance scheme.

Emmanuel Munyeragwe, head of COTAVEMA thanked Rwanda National Police for the safety message and requested for civic education to able them understand better about their role in the country’s development.
