EU provides to Rwanda 157 billion Rwf to boost electricity supply and agriculture

The European Union agreed with Rwandan gvt to provide it with a package of 157 billion Rwf to deliver within five coming years. The half of the package will be invested in activities aimed at modernizing agriculture while the rest will be put in efforts to produce and supply enough electricity energy.

The Rwandan Minister of finance and economic plan, Amb Gatete said that increase of electricity supply will play a role in reducing price.

The overall aim of the Rwandan government is to produce at not less than 563 MW and 70%  of Rwandans will be consuming electricity .

The EU Ambassador to Rwanda lauded the efforts Rwandan leadership has put in wisely utilizing the electric energy and this was a motive for the institution he stands for to provide that package to Rwanda.

He expressed his convictions that the electricity that Rwanda will produce will boost its paths towards sustainable development.

The first installment of the EU comprises of 450€ and was signed between Amb Claver Gatete and EU Ambassador to Rwanda Michael Ryan.

Amb Ryan said that this package intends at backing Rwandan government’s objectives to be achieved in the 2050 vision where every resident in Rwanda will be consuming electricity at a daily basis.

He pointed out that economic sectors such as business related activities, industries, schools are the ones that require more electricity energy.

The EU representative to Rwanda said Rwanda has proven itself to wisely manage its allocated funds thus the EU’s contribution to its efforts to energy self-sufficiency.

This self-sufficiency is a key ingredient towards the attainment of the EDPRS II, as Rwandan government aims at it.

However, the  electricity price keeps increasing as it shifted from 126 to 182 per watt.

Rwandan government is importing additional electric supplies from neighboring and remote countries such as Kenya and Ethiopia.
