Bumbogo- 20 years, Wounds of Genocide are still visible

One of the survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi  from Bumbogo in Nkuzuzu Sector, Gasabo District, Mutabaruka said that he still remembers what happened to him during the genocide as it happened few days ago due to the severity of wounds it injured him.

He said that during a commemoration event that took place at Nkuzuzu Memorial site in Gasabo District where one 1590 bodies of innocent Tutsi are buried.

Mutabaruka lost his parents in 1959. In 1994 his wife and children were killed during the genocide against the Tutsi.

As an elder, he said that the Genocide against was prepared earlier and executed systematically. Its culmination took place in 1994.

He said that when he was a young person, he was mistreated by teachers and family members, a situation that forced him to resettle elsewhere. During the 1994 genocide, the Interahamwe militias hunted him down.

When they found me I gave them money and released me after beating me, he witnessed. He has saved by the Inkotanyi soldiers when they liberated the country.

For him, the genocide is as if it happened yesterday because of the wounds it left with him. He saw his beloved ones being killed and remains in his soul as if it took place yesterday.

Uwiduhaye Theodore, who represents the Ibuka in Bumbogo said that the government of Rwanda through its representative bodies have built houses and facilities for  needy families.

He added that more infrastructures to help families of survivors will be built in the coming period so to make the living conditions of the survivors more productive.

The Guest of Honor, Hon. Murumunawabo Cecile comforted the survivors, highlighting that their firm commitment to make a step forward is a sign of a brighter future.

He advised the genocide perpetrators to change their minds and strive to become better and harmless citizens.

Bumbogo of  Nkuzuzu was densely populated by Tutsi who gathered together to fight against the killers. They vehemently opposed them until the soldiers from the Kami military base came and killed them.
