Wayne Rooney’s return to Old Trafford ended in a crushing defeat for Everton ahead of his appearance in court for a drink-driving charge on Monday.

Everton were hammered 4-0 by Manchester United, who are joint top of the Premier League with Manchester City – both sides boasting identical records.

Rooney squandered a glorious chance to equalise in the second half but had been substituted by the time United hit Everton with a late three-goal burst.

The 31-year-old former England captain is due to appear in person at Stockport Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Rooney was charged with drink-driving after being stopped by police while driving a 29-year-old brunette home from a night out in her Volkswagen Beetle.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman, who praised Rooney’s contribution on Sunday, admitted he is under pressure after three defeats in eight days that have seen his side concede 10 goals.

Koeman said: ‘Now we have four games at home in different competitions. We need to win.’

The next two Premier League matches at Goodison Park will be seen as winnable by Toffees fans as Bournemouth and Burnley travel to Merseyside.

Both Koeman and Rooney will be looking to put a difficult month behind them and seek to propel Everton back up the table.
