The university’s head of security Jackson Muchunguzi told this reporter that Jonathan Rwonthnga, a fourth year law student at Makerere University collapsed and died today (Monday) at around 1am.

He was among the students meant to graduate in January 2017.
Mr Muchunguzi said the student was found unconscious at the main gate by police officers who were deployed to man the university following its closure by President Yoweri Museveni on November 1.

“During our normal police patrol, we found somebody who was sleeping around the main gate and when we checked on him, he couldn’t speak or move. He was taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital where he died on arrival,” Mr Muchuguzi said.

Mr Muchunguzi said they cannot ascertain the cause of his death as they are waiting for the postmortem report from doctors at Mulago.

He said Rwonthnga was found with car keys but they could not establish where his car was.

“Our police officers have already started investigations, starting from the hostel near Law Development Centre [LDC] where he was staying,” said Mr Muchunguzi.

He, however, warned students who are still in their respective hostels that no one is responsible for their lives because the university was closed and everyone was expected to go home.
