Filippo Grandi, the boss of the UNHCR, is in the great lakes region to discuss on issues concerning the refugees. He is expected to meet, in different occasions, with the Heads of State of the region namely Paul Kagame(Rwanda), Joseph Kabila(DRC) and Pierre Nkurunziza(Burundi).

This Sunday the HCR boss Grandi visited refugees sheltered in Gihembe, Gicumbi, district

He is currently in Rwanda since, April, 08, 2018, and is expected to meet with President Paul Kagame today in his office as RFI reports. Before arriving in Kigali he visited the DRC where he met President Kabila

After meeting President Kagame, he will go to Burundi to meet President Pierre Nkurunziza to discuss on refugee issues.

Burundi currently has many refugees in the region who fled in the neighboring countries.

He said that issues concerning refugees can’t be handled with a single nation in the region, thus calling for cooperation among regional leaders.

After landing at Kigali International Airport, he made a visit at Gihembe refugee camp where thousands of DRC refugees are sheltered.

Refugees expressed their concerns to him, mainly the ones that are related to the short money package that does not allow them to fully satisfy daily needs.

Grandi said that concerned bodies are currently assessing on how and by which means refugees can be intellectually and economically empowered as to be able to take care of themselves.
