Danish authorities on Tuesday arrested a Danish national upon an extradition request from Rwanda, where he’s suspected of committing crimes against humanity in 1994.

Prosecutor Martin Stassen said the 49-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of taking part in a massacre in a church and at a university where more than 1,000 people were killed.

He said thorough investigations had been conducted and that there was a basis for the man’s extradition.

“After a very thorough investigation, it is (our) opinion that there is a basis for his extradition,” AP quotes Stassen to say.

The unidentified man is reported to have moved to Denmark in 2001, and he obtained a Danish citizenship in 2014.

According to Stassen, another man was extradited to Rwanda four years ago, and his trial is ongoing.

An estimated 800,000 Rwandans were massacred in the 100-day period, with more than two million displaced, most of whom fled to neighbouring countries for refuge.
