The official communiqué released by the UNHCR Rwanda informs that the calmness is prevailing in the recently troubled Kiziba refugee camp located in Karongi district, Western Rwanda.
Troubles in Kiziba camp came after some of refugees claimed that the funds they received from donors ( UNHCR) are cut down, resulting into more complicated living conditions.
At least 500 refugees reached the UNHCR office in Karongi district to manifest their anger and were advised to return back to the camp as the matter was being settled out by concerned bodies but they refused.
Instead of obeying the advice from UNHCR, administrative and security officials they (refugees) turned angrier and attacked police forces with sharp metal sticks injuring some of them.
During the clash, some of the refugees were severely wounded and succumbed to these wounds.
Numbers indicated that eleven of the wounded refugees dead.
The rest of the refugees returned to the camp and re-integrated their former living conditions.
In its former news release, the UNHCR condemned the incident that took lives of some of refugees while the matter would have been dealt with in a peaceful way, it said.
However, the yesterday’s news release informs that the calmness has returned to the camp, adding that further investigation should be conducted as to unveil its underlying causes.
It informs that situation is normal as schools re-opened. The Kiziba refugee camp hosts not less than 17 000 refugees most of them being children and youth.
It is located in Rwankuba Sector, in Karongi district, Western Province of Rwanda.
