This week end, the staff  of the BDF(Business Development Fund) visited the Nyamata memorial site and witnessed  fear-inspiring images displaying how the killings were conducted in the region. The visit to the memorial was in order to commemorate the genocide against the Tutsi for the 20th time.

The Memorial site guiding personnel explained to the visitors how the killings which took the lives of over 10,000 Tutsis were conducted in a period that did not exceed three days.

Many Tutsi coming from all the corners of the region came to hide at the Nyamata Catholic church, hoping that to be given mercy as people who were hiding in a God’s dedicated house.

One of the survivors, Bosco Rurangirwa told the BDF staff that in the former Bugesera region there were over 80000 Tutsi but survivors are not currently over 2000 people.

The saddest issue is that among all killed, only 45, 314 are the ones whose bodies have been found and buried in honorable way, the remaining ones are missing.

Some of the missing bodies have been thrown in Akagera and Nyabarongo rivers.

Interahamwe militias entered the church and started killed mercilessly all people inside with machetes and fire guns. They were telling us that both God and the Devil have abandoned the Tutsis, Rurangirwa said.

The Interahamwe killed Tutsi with the unimaginable hatred and ferocity that kids were beaten to walls and pregnant women were speared in their wombs.

One of the women killed during genocide in Nyamata is a woman violated by 20 men and speared in the womb by Interahamwe. Her body was exposed in the memorial site to show how the Tutsi women were killed.

John Rutagengwa who was the leading official of the BDF staff said that the institution will keep on visiting different genocide memorial sites as to learn more about how it was conducted.

He said that BDF will also keep on providing necessary help to the survivors as to enable them overcome the hindrances left by the genocide.
